Lesson 3 of our free online grinds which we are providing for Leaving Cert Ordinary level students!

This one is on Graphs and Functions, on Wed 23rd May at 8pm.  I am going to show you how to tackle some typical exam questions.  Remember you also need to understand this stuff when you do applications of differentiation questions.

]]><![CDATA[Some Good News! "Combinations" is NOT on the LC Ordinary Syllabus.]]>Sun, 22 Apr 2012 22:28:49 +0100http://www.themathstutor.ie/2/post/2012/04/some-good-news-combinations-is-not-on-the-lc-ordinary-syllabus.htmlSome of the books for LCO include a section on Combinations / Selections as well as Arrangements / Permutations.  

However, we work directly from the official syllabus and we can see clearly (at the top of page 17) that Combinations / Selections is NOT required for LCO (only for LC Higher).

Just to make sure, we contacted the NCCA who are responsible for the curriculum, and they confirmed our understanding as above.  You can read an extract from their email below if you wish.

So, in summary, there is no need to cover this Combinations / Selections material for LCO which is good news, as it is one less thing to study!  

Remember that you DO need to cover Arrangements / Permutations at LCO and LCH.

"The syllabus does not use the terms permutations / combinations. This was deliberate so that students would get a clearer understanding of what is involved (arranging / selecting respectively).

The syllabus is quite clear: OL students (and therefore also HL students) are expected to be able to count the arrangements of n distinct object (n!) and also the number of ways of arranging r objects from n distinct objects. 

In addition, HL students are expected to be able to count the number of ways of selecting r objects from n distinct objects.

We have been delighted with the response, with lots of people using the system and some great feedback.

]]><![CDATA[Countdown to launch!]]>Sat, 14 Jan 2012 23:11:03 +0100http://www.themathstutor.ie/2/post/2012/01/first-post.htmlWe are in the final couple of weeks before we launch our online maths learning system at the end of the month, and we are burning lots of midnight oil at the moment to give it a final polish!

Thanks for your patience, and thanks for all the positive feedback from everyone using the trial system.

We are sure you will agree it was worth the wait.  Maths learning in Ireland will never be the same again!
